Vadh 2 – movie review

A Rare Find: This Thriller’s Intricacy is a Breath of Fresh Air

Vadh 2 movie review Sanjay Mishra, Neena Gupta

A couple of years ago, Vadh, a crime thriller starring Sanjay Mishra and Neera Gupta had released. But it’s sequel, Vadh 2 is in no way is it connected to the earlier franchise. Probably to take advantage of its predecessor’s success, Vadh 2 is made using the same title.

Sanjay Mishra has done a great job playing the role of Shambhunath Mishra. He is a prisoner in the jail, and in the adjacent prison, Neena Gupta is imprisoned for committing two murders. This is not a story between the two. The story is has a louder and a bigger perspective.

We have Prakash Singh, a good police warden, but Komal Mishra is the authoritarian jailer and another character, Shilpa Shukla, who plays Rajni the jail warden. Keshav (Akshay Dogra) a notorious character who is politically connected, disappears from the jail premises.

How does he disappear? Why does he disappear? And will the jail authorities be able to catch him? This is what the story unfolds into. I would not elaborate it any further.

Story of Vadh 2 is interestingly constructed with Inspector Ateet Singh investigating the disappearance of the convicted prisoner. Thus unfolds several facets to the case which makes it further riveting.

This is what makes Vadh 2 a gripping and dynamic, politically thrilling and a morally complex thriller. One gets actually involved in the narrative and that is the beauty of this film.

Speaking about the performances, Sanjay Mishra is a seasoned actor and Neena Gupta also needs no certification about her abilities. Shilpa Shukla who is playing another warden, has also proven herself in several films prior to this one. Kumud Mishra the senior actor who has come to films from theater is brilliant. Overall, the film is a fodder for thought and it is a gritty quest for justice.

How does this prisoner disappear from jail? His disappearance is also connected to political elements. So, every inmate is under suspicion. Interestingly, Manju, played by Neena Gupta is serving time in jail for double murder.

Sanjay Mishra and Neena Gupta play similar gripping roles yet there is no connection to the original film. Whereas in Vadh Sanjay their characters were related but in Vadh 2 their characterisation is clearly different. Every minute is a thrill in it’s  duration of 131 minutes.

Akshay Dogra also plays Akshay who comes to jail with his own hideous motives. And how he disappears, and why, and how he disappears is the story of V2. This boy has also done a good job.

And another character of Atit Singh played by Amit Keshav Singh has performed impressively. He investigates the disappearance of Keshav. How and why Keshav disappeared, he has shed light on this.

Music also plays a very important role in this film with the composition being credited to Rochak Kohli. Very craftilyt, without interrupting the flow of the film, how the music takes over the film in a beautiful way. Whereas these days, we often see so many films having no proper characterization, but in this film, characterization plays a very vital role.

As you leave the theater, you will realise that you were fully involved with what happens in the theater. Few directors leave their mark. Jaspal Singh Sandhu who was also the director of original Vadh, leaves his mark in this one too. Often the takes (film shots and scenes) resemble to that of a Hollywood film and you are always left wondering whether are you really watching a Bollywood film? Very much unlike the typical Indian films, Vadh 2 has given importance to the subject and not to the stars.

Finally I would appreciate Luv Ranjan who, despite being a director himself, has strictly confined himself to the boundaries of a producer and has given a total free hand to director Jaspal Singh Sandhu. Hats off to you!

Cinema lovers and aspiring filmmakers would love to watch the intricacies of a good film, which is quite rare these days.
